In an overburdened social welfare system, abused and neglected children often slip through the cracks. That’s where CASA volunteers like you can help make a difference.
Appointed by family court judges, CASA volunteers typically handle one case at a time until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. Other people come and go in the child’s life, but their CASA volunteer provides a constant presence the child needs to thrive and move on with their life.
Volunteers start by getting to know everyone in that child's life: parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers and others. They use the information they gather to inform judges and others of what the child needs and what will be the best permanent home for them.
You do not have to be a lawyer or social worker to be a volunteer. We welcome people from all walks of life. We are simply looking for people who care about children and have common sense. As a volunteer, you will be thoroughly trained and well supported by professional staff to help you through each case.
You must pass a background check, participate in a 30-hour pre-service training course and agree to stay with a case until it is closed (a year and a half on average). Our staff can help assist you with further information and requirements.

There are many meaningful ways to volunteer with CASA Monroe, each providing a unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in Monroe County. Volunteers can become Court Appointed Special Advocates, working directly with children to ensure their voices are heard in court, or assist at community events to raise awareness and support for our programs. Additionally, volunteers can help with fundraising or serve on committees, all of which contribute to CASA Monroe’s mission of providing children with a brighter, safer future.
Becoming a CASA Volunteer Advocate with CASA Monroe involves a simple yet impactful process. First, you complete an application and undergo a background check to ensure the safety and well-being of the children we serve. Afterward, you participate in a comprehensive training program, which provides the tools and knowledge needed to advocate for children within the Monroe County Court System. Once trained, you are matched with a child or case and begin your role as a compassionate advocate, working closely with social workers, attorneys, and the child’s family to ensure their best interests are represented in court and throughout the foster care process.
The role of a CASA Volunteer Advocate within a court case is to serve as an independent, unbiased voice for the child. They gather information by speaking with the child, family members, social workers, and others involved in the case to understand the child's needs and best interests. The CASA advocate presents their findings to the court, making recommendations about the child's well-being, placement, and future. Their ultimate goal is to ensure that the child's rights are upheld and that they receive the necessary support and care for a safe and permanent future.
There are over 950 CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) programs across the United States, serving children in nearly every county. These programs are part of a nationwide network working to ensure that children in foster care have a voice in the legal system and receive the support they need to thrive.
CASA Monroe has been highly effective in advocating for children in the foster care system, making a significant impact on the lives of local children in need. With dedicated volunteers, CASA Monroe helps children navigate the complexities of the legal and child welfare systems, ensuring they receive the support and care they deserve. The program has led to positive outcomes, including shorter stays in foster care, increased chances of finding permanent homes, and improved emotional and developmental well-being for the children served. CASA Monroe’s advocacy continues to play a crucial role in improving the futures of vulnerable children in the community.
CASA Monroe is funded through a combination of private donations, grants, fundraising events, and community support. These funds enable the organization to provide training, resources, and ongoing support for its volunteers, as well as to sustain its advocacy programs for children in foster care. Additionally, partnerships with local businesses, foundations, and individuals who believe in CASA Monroe’s mission play a critical role in ensuring that the organization can continue to serve children in need.
